The Perth Bach Society was created in 2021 to fulfil a wish for people who like to hear Bach’s music, performed live in its authentic, spiritual context.
As well as stand-alone performances such as tonight’s, the Society has performed cantatas in services throughout 2021, in the appropriate liturgical setting for which they were composed.
Since 2021, they have performed Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland (BWV 62) in November 2021, Ich habe Genung (BWV 82) in February, and Widerstehe doch der Sünde (BWV 54) in March 2022, along with excerpts from the Matthauspassion (BWV 244) for Good Friday and the Gloria (Vivaldi RV 589) for Easter Sunday.
At their inaugural concert, they performed Brandenburg Concerto IV (BWV 1049), Concerto for Violin & Oboe (BWV 1060R) and Coffee Cantata (BWV 211). The second concert featured the entirety of Vivaldi’s Gloria along with Handel’s Foundling Hospital Anthem (HWV 268). The September concert presented by the Perth Bach Society included Vivaldi’s Flute Concerto La Tempesta di Mare (RV 433), Bach’s cantata Widerstehe doch der Sünde (BWV 54), and Telemann’s Concerto for Flute, Violin and Cello (TWV 53-A2).
The final concert each year is Carols and Corelli by Candlelight on Saturday, where the combined choirs and the grand organ are joined by soloists from the society to perform the most beautiful carols from England, Germany and the classics from back here in Australia.
The Bach Society is run by volunteers, and new members are always welcome. Please get in touch by email, stating whether you wish to be an active (performer, musicologist or management) or audience member.
